The Multiple Sclerosis Society of India (MSSI) is a patient support group that is dedicated to minimising the effects of multiple sclerosis, both on patients and their families, by aiding and assisting them in coping with the disease and meeting the challenges of daily living. The society is also actively involved in raising awareness about the disease.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is often known as the “Crippler of the Young Adult”, as it affects people in the prime of their lives mostly in the age group of 18 – 40 years! It is an auto-immune disorder which is sudden and has debilitating effects on the body. It has no cause and hence no cure.
Like the covering that insulates and protects electrical wires, the nerve fibers in our bodies are insulated by a fatty substance called “myelin” which surrounds and protects the nerve fibers of the brain and spinal cord. When any part of this myelin sheathing is destroyed, due to our own immune cells, the nerve responses to the brain are interrupted and distorted resulting in Multiple Sclerosis and hence the term- Autoimmune disorder.
Our chapter works for the welfare of the people affected by MS. One of our main thrusts is in creating more awareness about Multiple Sclerosis. We work with the neurological wings of hospitals in and around Chennai and collect details about the number of reported MS cases. MSSI reaches out to these MS patients with medical, financial and emotional support such as:
