Inauguration of a model class room at the V-Excel Educational Trust by United Way of Chennai on 27th Jan. 2014
United Way of Chennai (UWC) has donated classroom furniture to V-Excel Educational Trust (V-Excel), an NGO committed to education of children with developmental disabilities. This includes good quality tables, chairs, cabinets, corner book racks, green boards and bulletin boards, all 15 in number. The total contribution amount was Rs. 5,92,000/-, for all the materials.
A site meeting was organized at V-Excel’s new school building at R. A. Puram in lieu of a formal handover of the items. The UWC team – Mr. Alagappan, Mr. Prakash and Mrs. Shyamala – was welcomed by V-Excel’s team – Dr. Vasudha, Mrs. Sundari, Ajita Panshikar, Gita Bhalla, Usha Rajagopal, G. Chandrika, and Charumathi. Dr. Vasudha, the Founder-Director gave a background of the organization, discussed various services offered for different age groups under the ‘life span education model’ by the institution and talked of the multi-disciplinary professional staff required to cater to children with special needs. Dr. Vasudha passionately explained how V-Excel’s approach of ‘understanding the child at a deeper level’ rather than ‘fixing the child’ made it different from the conventional special schools. She spoke of the challenges faced in terms of manpower and funds, and how UWC support has been extremely valuable. She also referred to V-Excel’s active participation in different marathons and exhibitions held by UWC, expressing hope to strengthen the relationship further.
The program planned was very unique. A model classroom was setup with class items donated by UWC and a ‘Circle Time’ session was demonstrated live for the benefit of the partner. Mrs. Gita Bhalla, Principal of the special school had briefed everyone about this concept and also shared some traits of children with Autism, Mental Retardation, and Down’s syndrome. She explained the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of the enigmatic behavior manifested by the special children. The sessi
on was very different from any general class and incorporated a lot of music, movement and rhythm activities. It was a very touching experience for all to see the children and experience the Circle Time with them. The UWC team was very happy to witness this very eye-opening and different program. Some pictures have been attached here for reference.
Since the building is new, V-Excel would like to ensure that it is truly a positive learning environment that every child has a right to. They would be happy to equip the place and classrooms further with things such as neat shoe rack, a corner nature table, a bag cabinet, a display board, a chest of drawers, therapy material, mats for children, carpets and soft furnishings, art trolley, puppet show stand and the like.
All in all, it was a very insightful program and highlighted the intense work needed and being done for children with developmental disabilities.
