“Bagya laksmi” ‐ her name means goddess of luck in her native language, but Baghaylaksmi is a 34 year widow who always thought the goddess of luck had left her long ago. She hails from an interior village called Chithur near Madurai. When she was just 17 years old she got married to Muniswamy a cook by profession. She has three children, two boys and a girl. In 2005 Muniswamy died due to the severe liver infection. Bagyalakshmi being an illiterate herself and a young widow was at first confused and did not know what to do next and how to provide a life for her children. At that time her elder sister who lives in Pudupattinaam supported her by
helping her open a petty shop in the village. As her younger son is a student of HOPE foundation school, she came to know about the United Way Micro Credit Scheme and approached the latter for a loan to upgrade her petty shop. She is the one among the first beneficiary from Pudupattinam kuppam. She says she is lucky “bhagyam” (luck) to be part of the Micro Credit Scheme run by the HOPE foundation with the support of United Way.
